Integrating rural areas into the digital world is important for economic development. Connecting homes to the internet is crucial. However, the amount of data that those digital pipelines can carry is also critical. Here we evaluate the traffic growth in the last decades and future trends based on 4K/8K video and virtual and augmented reality. This evaluation can help to understand the capacity needs for the “middle mile,” which links local internet service providers to the main internet infrastructure.
